MHollis - Mobile Technology & Assisting Libraries

How Does Mobile Technology Assist Library's and Library Staff?

ProQuest 2026

Mobile technology, such as iPads, laptops and other personal devices have allowed great expansion in the advancements of library spaces. It has greatly improved the way libraries provide services to their communities because in the past, patrons had to physically visit a library to search catalogs, check out books and access all of their services. Today, these mobile applications allow libraries to extend their services far beyond the library building. Mobile technology helps libraries become more accessible, convenient and interactive for users of all age groups.
According to Using Mobile Technology to Deliver Library Services by Kay Neville, the author explains how mobile technology helps libraries meet the changing needs of patrons. Specifically, it addresses how new technology can be implemented in countries like the United Kingdom and Australia, based on geographical differences in patron demand. Neville discusses how the growing use of smartphones has encouraged libraries to create mobile-friendly services that users can access anytime and anywhere. Libraries now provide mobile catalogs, text notifications, online databases, e-books and virtual reference services that improve communication and make information access easier (Neville, 2013).
One important advantage of mobile technology in libraries is convenience. Users can search for books, renew materials, place holds and access digital resources directly from their phones with needed assistance from library staff. Mobile apps and websites also allow students and researchers to quickly find academic information while studying or working remotely. This is especially useful for college students and busy patrons who rely heavily on mobile devices for their daily needs.
Additionally, the article The Role of Mobile Technology and Their Application in Library Services in Digital Era, by Karan Singh and Pradip Ku Nikandia, emphasize how technology must change and adapt the way people do in these spaces. It delves into the constant evolution of technological devices and how they serve patrons from these perspectives. By adapting and extending services to the users, higher education and effective utilization may become more attainable (Ku Nikandia & Singh, 2017).
